My Glasgow Hyrox Experience: How It Changed My Training (and What It Can Do for You Too!)

If you’ve never heard of HYROX, think of it as the perfect combination of strength and cardio—a race that combines functional workouts with running in a way that challenges your whole body and mind. Last month, I took on HYROX Glasgow, and I’m still buzzing from the experience!

I signed up partly out of curiosity and partly for the challenge and motivation to focus my own training. What I didn’t expect was just how much it would influence the way I approach workouts—for myself and for my clients.

Why HYROX Training Works (and Why It’s So Aligned With What I Do!)

HYROX is built on simple but effective movements—there’s no complicated technique, no gymnastics-style skill required. It's accessible to all fitness levels because the exercises can be scaled and adapted, and there's no set time limit—you just go at your own pace and get it done. The goal is to finish, and that in itself is an incredible achievement.

The event mixes strength-based movements (like sled pushes, wall balls, farmer’s carries) with running—so it’s a total body workout that builds strength, boosts your cardiovascular fitness, reduces body fat, and challenges your mental resilience.

This kind of training fits perfectly with my approach to fitness: it’s functional, varied, challenging, and most of all, rewarding. It targets your entire body and pushes your physical and mental limits in a really empowering way. Whether you're working out for fat loss, better health, improved endurance, or just to feel stronger and more confident, HYROX-style workouts tick all the boxes.

It improves muscular strength and cardiovascular capacity, enhances your functional movement (the stuff that helps you move better in daily life), and encourages consistency through goal setting. It’s also fantastic for mental wellbeing—when you complete a tough circuit or beat your previous time, the sense of accomplishment and endorphin rush is hard to beat.

Plus, because it combines running with functional exercises like rowing, lunges, and burpees, you’re getting a real bang for your buck—burning calories, building strength, and improving heart health all at once. It’s one of the most effective and time-efficient ways to train.

How It Changed My Workouts

Training for HYROX gave me a new sense of direction. I wasn’t just working out for general fitness—I had a specific event in mind, and that changed everything. It helped me progress movements like box jumps, wall balls, and burpees, and explore exercises I wouldn’t usually to add into my routine - that were either part of Hyrox circuits or not, but would help me with my goals.

The best part? You don’t have to do the full HYROX circuit every time. I learned how to break it down into short, sharp workouts—20-30 minutes max. And let’s be honest, time is tight for most of us. Whether you’re juggling work, family, or just trying to carve out a bit of time for yourself, it’s not always realistic to commit to long training sessions.

What I loved about HYROX-style training is that it can easily be adapted to fit your day. You can split the exercises across the week or focus on 2–3 key movements per session and still get real results. It’s practical, effective, and it’s helped me—and now my clients—make training more manageable and consistent, even on the busiest weeks.

What I’m Bringing Into Client Sessions

Since doing HYROX, I’ve started bringing new circuits and exercises into my client sessions. It’s been amazing to watch clients embrace this new style of training - whether it’s a short fast-paced workout or learning to push a bit harder with wall balls or burpees, there’s something empowering about tapping into that next level.

It’s also helped me teach clients how to train smarter—you don’t need to go all out every session, and you can build up gradually using effective, time-efficient workouts.

And just to be clear—you absolutely don’t have to sign up for a HYROX event to benefit from this kind of training. For many of my clients, the goal isn’t the race—it’s feeling fitter, stronger, and more capable in everyday life. HYROX-style workouts can help you achieve that without ever needing to step into a competition.

That said, if you're the type who does like a challenge, or you’ve been looking for a goal to work toward, then HYROX could be just the thing to give your training purpose and structure. And if you fancy giving it a go, I’d love to help you train for it!

Why You Should Consider It Too

Honestly, what I love most about HYROX is that it’s truly for everyone. All ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities can take part—and the sense of achievement at the finish line is incredible.

You don’t have to be an athlete. You just have to be willing to try. It's safe as long as you listen to your body, and it can give you an amazing focus in your training, especially if you’ve been feeling stuck or unmotivated.

HYROX taught me a lot, gave me new energy for my own training, and opened up so many new ways I can support and challenge my clients.

If you’re looking for something new to work towards, something to shake up your training and make it exciting again—HYROX (or HYROX-style training) might be exactly what you need. And I’d love to help you get started!
